The current grant level is $300,000; $75,000 per year for a four-year period.

Description: The Pew Scholars Program supports assistant professors of outstanding promise in science relevant to the advancement of human health. The program is open to candidates with a doctorate in biomedical sciences or medicine. As of September 5, 2024, nominees must hold full-time appointments at the rank of assistant professor (Appointments such as Research Assistant Professor, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Assistant Professor Research Track, Visiting Professor or Instructor are not eligible.). Candidates must have been in such an appointment for less than four years (not appointed before June 10, 2020), whether or not such an appointment was on a tenure track. Time spent in clinical internships, residencies, or in work toward board certification does not count as part of this four-year limit.

Please note: the name of the official UMN applicant will be sent to Pew by their deadline of May 15, 2024, the online application website will open June 10, 2024, and the final submission deadline is September 5, 2024.

UM Nominations Process: To be considered for nomination, please submit the following pre-proposal materials as a single pdf document to collabor@umn.edu no later than 4pm on 5/1:

1. Cover page including nominee's name, Department & contact information, abstract of the proposed research.
2. Self-Assessment & Project Description (2-3 pages): Include a brief description of applicant's most significant research contribution to date. Provide a brief synopsis of the proposed research highlighting its particularly creative and risk-taking aspects. Include a statement of how the receipt of the Pew Scholarship would benefit the applicant and why the applicant’s research is personally significant to them.
3. Curriculum Vitae of nominee.
4. If the applicant is chosen to move forward, Pew would require three letters of reference from 1) Graduate School Advisor 2) Postdoctoral Advisor 3) Scientific reference from an individual in the Applicant's field. This referee should be familiar with the applicant's work, but not a current collaborator, not at the same institution and not a former fellowship advisor of the applicant. Please list these three referees including their name, University affiliation, discipline.

UMN Selection Process

  • Once the internal deadline has passed, if the number of applicants is less than or equal to the number of spots the university is allowed to send forward, the applicants automatically become the UMN nominee(s).
  • If the status of an opportunity is "First-Come, First-Served", there was not time to hold an internal review. Applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • If there are no applicants, the status will change to "Contact Us". At this point, the opportunity changes to a first-come, first-served opportunity.
  • If there are multiple applicants, the office coordinating the nomination will determine the review criteria and coordinate the review process. The status will change to "In Review".
  • Once the review has been completed all parties will be notified via email.
  • Nominees will be provided with an email from RIO (or the designated coordinating office) indicating that they are the university's nominee. This letter should accompany the nominee's proposal.
  • SPA is notified of the university's nominee(s) and the status is updated to "PI(s) Selected".
