Description: Hyundai Hope on Wheels (HHOW) has announced its Request for Proposals (RFP) for the 2019 Hyundai Scholar Hope Grant and Hyundai Young Investigator Grant. These grants are designed to support research in pediatric oncology. For 2019, HHOW will make available at least $10 million in grants for pediatric cancer research. The intent of the Hyundai Hope on Wheels Grants is to provide funding for principal investigators, whose research projects are likely to have a significant impact on improving the understanding of the biology of childhood cancer and/or developing novel diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic approaches for pediatric malignancies. Clinical trial research projects are not eligible for consideration. One application may be submitted in this category per institution and must include the concurrence of the Division Director of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, Brenda Weigel, MD, MSc.

UM Nominations Process: In order to be considered for a full application, please submit a one to two page Letter of Intent to Rick Jacobson at rickj@umn.edu outlining the proposed specific aims, timeline, and a brief description of how the funds would be used. Letters must be received by 12:00 PM CST on Thursday, January 17, 2019. The applicant will be chosen by an internal committee and notified no later than January 28, 2019. The final proposal is due via proposal central on February 19, 2019 by 5 PM PST.

Selection Process

  • Once the internal deadline has passed, the status will change to “In Review” and proposals will undergo review.
  • If there are multiple applicants, the office managing the nomination will determine the review criteria and coordinate the review process.
  • Once review has been completed all parties will be notified via email.
  • Nominees will be provided with a letter addressed to the sponsor from the RIO indicating that they are the university's nominee. This letter should accompany the nominee's proposal.
  • SPA is notified of the university's nominee(s) and the status is updated to “PI Selected”.
