Description: The overarching mission of the HF is to fund individuals conducting innovative and cutting-edge biomedical laboratory-based research that will potentially benefit children. Proposals should address either a specific unmet need in translational medicine or a strategic problem in applied science. See the RFP for further details. Faculty at all stages of career development are eligible, but the proposed work must not be currently supported by federal/national grants. The HF makes 10-12 new awards each year, at the level of $100,000/year for up to three years. The HF does not cover indirect costs. During the last couple years, the vast majority of awards have been made to Assistant Professors.

UM Nominations Process: The UMN can submit up to two nominees (one of whom must hold an MD degree). Anyone interested in applying should submit the following preproposal items as a single pdf document to vangi007@umn.edu no later than 4pm on July 20, 2018:

1) Brief cover letter describing your credentials and stage of career development that make you competitive for this program.
2) Updated NIH biosketch.
3) One page description of the proposed research project; paying strict attention to the HF expectations for the type of research considered for support (see pages 1 and 2 in the attached guidelines document from the HF), and clearly describing the difference between the current proposal and projects supported by federal/national funding.
4) Current list of funded and pending grant support, including current year direct costs to the PI for all sponsored projects.

Selection Process

  • Once the internal deadline has passed, the status will change to “In Review” and proposals will undergo review.
  • If there are multiple applicants, the office managing the nomination will determine the review criteria and coordinate the review process.
  • Once review has been completed all parties will be notified via email.
  • Nominees will be provided with a letter addressed to the sponsor from the RIO indicating that they are the university's nominee. This letter should accompany the nominee's proposal.
  • SPA is notified of the university's nominee(s) and the status is updated to “PI Selected”.
