Award Title: Fellowship Awards
Amount: $195,000
• Award is for two (2) years of fellowship training, with a possible additional year of funding based upon the demonstration of need and significant accomplishment. • Fellows will be awarded the normal PGY-level salary for their institution. Fringe rates should follow institutional policy. Total award capped at $97,500 per year. All Fellow awards are to cover salary and benefits only.

Description: St. Baldrick’s Fellowships are granted for two (2) years of pediatric oncology fellowship training, with an opportunity for one (1) additional year of funding based upon need, significant accomplishment, and approved application.

ATTENTION: limited submissions policy exception: Due to high interest from donors and low numbers of past applications, a second Fellow application will be accepted only if focused on one of the following:
o Brain tumors – all types, including rare forms, especially atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor (AT/RT), diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG)/diffuse midline glioma (DMG), and glioblastoma (GBM)
o Burkitt lymphoma – all types, especially sporadic
o Ewing sarcoma
o Rhabdoid tumors - Extrarenal

Applicant should be in their 2nd or 3rd year of pediatric oncology fellowship at the LOI due date. Exceptions are allowed for a research residency format (2 years of residency 4 years of fellowship).

Current funding priorities are divided into four categories:
1) New discovery research
2) Translational research and early phase clinical trials
3) Phase III clinical trials & infrastructure support of participating institutions (primarily the fall grant cycle)
4) Education of new pediatric oncology researchers

In addition to research to understand the biology of childhood cancers and discover leads to more effective treatments, topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Adolescents & young adults
Survivorship, outcomes, and quality of life
Supportive care
Epidemiology and pediatric cancer predispositions
Precision medicine
Alternative & complementary therapies

1. Cover page including PI name, department, contact information, project title, any co-PI's name and department, and one paragraph project abstract.
2. Project summary - to include solicitation specific information. (not more than three pages) -
3. Biosketch of PI and any co-PI's (2 - 5 pages, NSF, NIH, or other relevant format).
4. 2-3 names of possible UMN reviewers (NOT References) (with no Conflicts of Interest) plus 5 keywords to be used as search terms for possible reviewers (can be added to Cover Page)

Selection Process

  • Once the internal deadline has passed, the status will change to “In Review” and proposals will undergo review.
  • If there are multiple applicants, the office managing the nomination will determine the review criteria and coordinate the review process.
  • Once review has been completed all parties will be notified via email.
  • Nominees will be provided with a letter addressed to the sponsor from the RIO indicating that they are the university's nominee. This letter should accompany the nominee's proposal.
  • SPA is notified of the university's nominee(s) and the status is updated to “PI Selected”.
