Description: The University has been invited to nominate two individuals, one early career (Ph.D. since 2007) and one established scholar, for the 2018 Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program. The purpose of these awards is to provide fellowships “to talented individuals whose vibrant, creative research addresses pressing issues and cultural transitions affecting us at home and abroad. We are seeking your recommendations of extraordinary senior or junior scholars, journalists, and public intellectuals pursuing research on some of the most pressing political, economic, technological, and sociological challenges, as well as cultural transitions, facing us at home and abroad—challenges that compel attention and require thorough analysis.” The fellowship program aims to support the social sciences and humanities, and you are encouraged to nominated individuals whose proposals will incorporate, among other elements, historical precedents, cultural underpinnings, and moral arguments.

There are four topic areas from which to choose for each nomination: (1) Strengthening U.S. Democracy; (2) Technological and Cultural Creativity; (3) Global Connections and Global Ruptures; and (4) Environments, Natural and Human.

The Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program will award up to 35 fellowships of $200,000 each, lasting one or two years, that will enable recipients to (among other things) travel, hire research assistants, and take sabbaticals in order to focus on the research described in the proposals submitted as part of their nominations.

Please note that UMN is allowed to nominate one candidate per age category.

Please send materials for the individual you wish to nominate as a single pdf to vpfaa@umn.edu with “Carnegie Fellows” in the subject line by 5:00 PM on November 6. The deadline for submitting nominations to the funder is 5:00 PM on Friday, November 17. The internal deadline of November 6 will allow time for the selection process and for chosen nominees to assemble additional materials needed for a full application.

Materials needed by November 6 include a draft letter of nomination written by the dean or department chair, a prospectus by the nominee of three to five pages, a CV, and a budget. Additional materials will be needed for the nominations that go forward.
