Amount: $200,000
Each recipient is awarded up to $200,000, based on their prospectus and an estimated budget.

Description: The purpose of the Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program is to support high-caliber scholarship in the social sciences and humanities, making it possible for the recipients to devote time to research and writing that addresses pressing issues and cultural transitions affecting us at home and abroad. For the 2021 program, there are four broad topic areas that include a wide range of suggested subtopics:
Global connections and global ruptures
Strengthening U.S. democracy and exploring new narratives
Environments, natural and human
Technological and cultural creativity—potential and perils

Criteria: Nominations will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
Originality and promise of the idea
Quality of the proposal
Potential impact on the field
Record of the nominee
Plans to communicate findings to a broad audience

Additional Requirements: must be US citizen or permanent resident

UM Nominations Process: Please send materials for the individual you wish to nominate as a single pdf to vpfaa@umn.edu with “Carnegie Fellows” in the subject line by 5:00 PM on November 5. The deadline for submitting nominations to the funder is 5:00 PM on November 17. The internal deadline of November 5 will allow time for the selection process and for chosen nominees to assemble additional materials needed for a full application.

Materials needed by November 5 include (1) a draft letter of nomination written by the dean or department chair (which will be edited and signed by the president for nominees going forward), (2) a prospectus by the nominee of three to five pages, (3) a CV, and (4) a budget. Additional materials will be needed for the nominations that go forward.     • PI Selected: The PI(s) have been selected as the official UMN nominees.
    • Closed: UMN is no longer accepting applications.
UMN Selection Process

  • Once the internal deadline has passed, if the number of applicants is less than or equal to the number of spots the university is allowed to send forward, the applicants automatically become the UMN nominee(s).
  • If the status of an opportunity is "First-Come, First-Served", there was not time to hold an internal review. Applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • If there are no applicants, the status will change to "Contact Us". At this point, the opportunity changes to a first-come, first-served opportunity.
  • If there are multiple applicants, the office coordinating the nomination will determine the review criteria and coordinate the review process. The status will change to "In Review".
  • Once the review has been completed all parties will be notified via email.
  • Nominees will be provided with an email from RIO (or the designated coordinating office) indicating that they are the university's nominee. This letter should accompany the nominee's proposal.
  • SPA is notified of the university's nominee(s) and the status is updated to "PI(s) Selected".
