Brain Research Foundation’s Annual Seed Grant Program was initiated in 1981. The purpose of our
program is to provide start-up monies for new research projects in the field of neuroscience that will
likely lead to extramural funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or other outside funding
sources
Funding Specifics:
1.) Funding is to be directed at pilot research projects that are both innovative and will likely
lead to successful grant applications to NIH and other public and private funding entities.
2.) Assistant Professor – Junior faculty with a new research project that will generate pilot data
that will lead to RO1 funding or a comparable outside grant will be first priority.
• Must provide abstract and specific aims for current grants and indicate if there
is any overlap.
3.) Associate Professor – Faculty who are pursuing new research directions.
• Must explain how the project is a new research direction.
• Must provide abstract and specific aims for current grant(s) and indicate if there
is any overlap.
4.) A new technique is not considered a new direction unless it pertains to a different area of
study.
5.) Grants are NOT to be used for bridge funding between grants.
Internal Submission Requirements
Step One: Expression of Interest
RIO kindly requests that all interested PIs email collabor@umn.edu to express their intent to submit an internal application by or before 4pm on 9/8/2026.
In your email, please include:
- PI’s name and contact information
- List of 3-5 names of possible UMN reviewers (NOT References, with no Conflicts of Interest)
- 5 keywords to be used as search terms for possible reviewers.
Providing this information in advance of the internal deadline, especially your list of potential reviewers, allows our office to begin recruiting the review committee and expedites the overall review process.
Step Two: Internal Submission
Those interested in applying should submit the following as a single pdf document to collabor@umn.edu no later than 4pm on 9/8/2026:
1. Cover Page: Include PI name, department, contact information, project title, any co-PI's name and department, and one paragraph project abstract.
2. Project Overview and High-Level Timeline: The combined project overview and timeline cannot exceed 2 pages and must summarize the project by stating its goals and outlining the proposed approaches to achieve them.
3. Biosketch(es) of PI and any co-PI's (NIH format, 2-5 pages).
4. If not already submitted in Step One (see above), a list of 3-5 names of possible UMN reviewers (NOT References, with no Conflicts of Interest) plus 5 keywords to be used as search terms for possible reviewers (can be added to Cover Page).
