Description: The Humanities Without Walls Consortium (HWW) is inviting proposals for Grand Research Challenge Grants to fund multi-institutional, collaborative, humanities-based projects that “build a commitment to methodologies of reciprocity and redistribution.” Projects will showcase what is possible when humanists have resources dedicated to imagining their research in ways that move beyond the single investigator model or the monograph as a singular outcome. Grants will be made for up to $150,000 over a two-year period beginning January 1, 2022. Applicants must inform the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), their department chair, and college dean of intent to apply no later than Oct. 1, 2021. All applications must be submitted through Sponsored Projects Administration (SPA). Applicants are encouraged to notify the IAS as early as possible for assistance with project framing and in building a multi-institutional collaboration.

To be eligible for funding, research teams must include participants from at least two HWW Consortial partner Institutions OR include participants from one HWW consortial partner institution and one of more of the following:
-- Regional and Community Colleges
-- Predominantly Minority Serving Institutions
-- Historically Black Colleges and Universities
-- Tribal Colleges and Universities
-- Community organizations

The Principal Investigator (PI) on the primary project must be tenure-line faculty at any of the Humanities Without Walls consortial institutions and come from a discipline within the humanities and/or arts. If partnering with one or more HWW consortial partner institutions, the PIs on the collaborating universities’ subawards must also be tenure-line faculty members. Teams may include scholars from any discipline.

For-profit entities are not eligible to be project partners.

UM Nominations Process: LOI Instructions

UMN PIs must contact the Institute for Advanced Study, and their department chair and college dean, no later than October 1, 2021 with an email indicating intent to apply for this grant, the project title, and all external collaborators and their institutions. Send the LOI via email to ias@umn.edu and jburba@umn.edu with “HWW - Intent to Apply” in subject line.

Subaward PIs must contact their HWW consortial institution contact (https://www.humanitieswithoutwalls.illinois.edu/contact.html), department chairs, and college deans (when applicable) no later than October 1, 2021 with an email indicating intent to apply for this challenge, the project title, and all external collaborators and their institutions.

All applicants from consortial institutions are encouraged to inform their member institution contacts of interest in this opportunity as early as possible.

Selection Process

  • Once the internal deadline has passed, the status will change to “In Review” and proposals will undergo review.
  • If there are multiple applicants, the office managing the nomination will determine the review criteria and coordinate the review process.
  • Once review has been completed all parties will be notified via email.
  • Nominees will be provided with a letter addressed to the sponsor from the RIO indicating that they are the university's nominee. This letter should accompany the nominee's proposal.
  • SPA is notified of the university's nominee(s) and the status is updated to “PI Selected”.
