Description: AHRQ and PCORI invite applications from qualified institutions to create Learning Health System Embedded Scientist Training and Research (LHS E-STaR) Centers to support the professional development of scientists to conduct research that accelerates progress towards an integrated learning health system. To achieve this aim, the E-STaR Centers will build new models of LHS infrastructure that: strengthens institutional research training in CER and PCOR; enhances diversity in the LHS research workforce; strengthens partnerships with community partners and health system and other stakeholders; and conducts patient-centered clinical comparative effectiveness research projects to improve health system operations, quality, and health outcomes.

UM Nominations Process: Those interested in applying should submit the following as a single pdf document to collabor@umn.edu no later than 4pm on 2/20:

1. Cover page including PI name, department, contact information, project title, any co-PI's name and department, and one paragraph project abstract.
2. Project summary (not more than three pages).
3. Biosketch of PI (NIH format or similar, not more than five pages).

Applications will be reviewed to confirm they are scientifically distinct. In the case that two are similar, there will be an internal review to determine a single candidate to move forward in that area. Any questions can be submitted to collabor@umn.edu.

Selection Process

  • Once the internal deadline has passed, the status will change to “In Review” and proposals will undergo review.
  • If there are multiple applicants, the office managing the nomination will determine the review criteria and coordinate the review process.
  • Once review has been completed all parties will be notified via email.
  • Nominees will be provided with a letter addressed to the sponsor from the RIO indicating that they are the university's nominee. This letter should accompany the nominee's proposal.
  • SPA is notified of the university's nominee(s) and the status is updated to “PI Selected”.
