Description:

The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer and donor powered charity committed to supporting the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives.

UMN is allowed to submit one application per grant opportunity. Grants in this cycle include:
• Research Grants
• St. Baldrick’s Scholars (internal deadline 9/29/26 because of later LOI deadline)
• St. Baldrick’s International Scholars (internal deadline 9/29/26 because of later LOI deadline)
• Survivorship & Supportive Care Research Grants (internal deadline 9/29/26 because of later LOI deadline)

Total submissions allowed per institution: Up to five (5) LOIs, consisting of one submission in each program category, plus one additional submission under the funding interest submission,* if eligible.

*Funding Interest and Limited Submission:
Only one additional submission is permitted per institution for the entire cycle; this does not allow one additional submission in each program or funding category.
- Rhabdomyosarcoma
- Brain tumors –especially atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor (AT/RT), diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG)/diffuse midline glioma (DMG), and glioblastoma (GBM)
- Burkitt lymphoma – all types, especially sporadic
- Rhabdoid tumors - Extrarenal

UPDATE, 9/10/2026: There is one spot remaining for a Research Grant LOI from the University of Minnesota. Please contact RIO at collabor@umn.edu for more information if you are interested in applying, and provide a cover page (required elements described below).

Those interested in applying should submit the following as a single pdf document to collabor@umn.edu no later than 4pm on: 09/8/2026

1. Cover page including PI name, department, contact information, SBF grant category (i.e., Research Grant), project title, any co-PI's name and department, and one paragraph project abstract.
2. Draft of one-page LOI as required by St. Baldrick's (see St. Baldrick's instructions for the type of grant you are applying for).
3. Biosketch of PI and any co-PI's (NIH format or similar, not more than 5 pages each).
4. 3-5 names of possible UMN reviewers (NOT References) (with no Conflicts of Interest) plus 5 keywords to be used as search terms for possible reviewers (can be added to Cover Page)

UMN Selection Process


  • Once the internal deadline has passed, if the number of applicants is less than or equal to the number of spots the university is allowed to send forward, the applicants automatically become the UMN nominee(s).
  • If the status of an opportunity is "First-Come, First-Served", there was not time to hold an internal review. Applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • If there are no applicants, the status will change to "Contact Us". At this point, the opportunity changes to a first-come, first-served opportunity.
  • If there are multiple applicants, the office coordinating the nomination will determine the review criteria and coordinate the review process. The status will change to "In Review".
  • Once the review has been completed all parties will be notified via email.
  • Nominees will be provided with an email from RIO (or the designated coordinating office) indicating that they are the university's nominee. This letter should accompany the nominee's proposal.
  • SPA is notified of the university's nominee(s) and the status is updated to "PI(s) Selected".
